Primary School Students Enjoy Visit to Newham Site

In early June, the Bugler Developments Team at Burgoyne’s Depot in East Ham, Newham, were joined on site by Year Four Students from local school, St Michael’s Catholic Primary.

With their hi-vis at the ready, 27 students as well as their teachers and parent helpers, were welcomed with an introduction to the site by Project Manager Joe Callender.

Joe then guided our visitors out onto site, where they got to see some of the site machinery in action – including small and large excavators. They also saw bricklaying in action as the outer walls are constructed. Our site here consists of both houses and apartments for the London Borough of Newham.

Joe, along with Contracts Manager, Scott Willson, our Resident Liaison Officers Helena O’Keeffe and Renata Almeida and our Head of Marketing Thomas Bugler, happily answered the many questions that our inquisitive visitors had – including, “How many bricks will you need to build these homes?”, “What shapes will the homes be?” and “How long does it take to become a digger driver?”

The children excitedly took everything they saw in, and were given a goody bag and a construction site activity worksheet to complete once back in the classroom.

Scott Willson, Contracts Manager said “We enjoyed having our young visitors from St Michael’s along to Burgoyne’s Depot. They were all very well-behaved and provided many thought provoking questions as they watched the construction in progress. We would like to thank both the students, and their teachers and parent helpers for coming to visit and hope we have inspired them to look excitedly on the world of construction”.

The visit to Burgoyne’s Depot in East Ham, has left a good impression on the minds of possible future construction engineers, from St. Michael’s Catholic Primary School. The visit was able to support the children’s practical understanding of how engineering works in the construction of buildings, in real life.   

The visit did well to further inform our discussions, in the classroom, with our current science topic – Big Build.  The children relished in the experience of asking real engineers real questions about how buildings are made.  What a wonderful opportunity that was!  The visit to Burgoyne’s Depot on 12 June 2023, has left an indelible mark on the children’s understanding about the importance of machinery, man power and great feats of engineering in the house-building industry.”
